LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE

The iconic Barcelona Chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, designed in 1929:

Barcelona-Chair-1

Designed so many years ago yet still so contemporary looking.   It’s the definition of modern furniture. Although it has become ubiquitous in commercial spaces, I think it looks particularly good in residential spaces when contrasted with more traditional furnishings.  It allows the graceful lines of the chair to shine.

Another iconic piece is the Mies van der Rohe day bed:

We used this beauty in a project I worked on:

These pieces are still in production today and can be pricey if bought at Knoll or Design Within Reach, but you can find lots of good reproductions by doing a little research.  I found reasonably priced pieces at Modern Classics and Contempo Concepts.

You have to think outside the box sometimes and mix things up when designing your space.  I think it makes the end result so much more interesting.
